Covengtry's u15 Junior Division State Cup Semi-Final Results In Rugby PA Spring 15s

[ 2024-5-5 ]  u15 Junior Division State Semi-Final Results | Rugby PA Spring 15s - Last Sunday’s Junior division playoff game between Coventry and LaSalle was a barn burner and defensive battle.  The winner of the game earning a spot in the State Championship game. The results at the end of the first half of the contest stood exactly the same as they had been at the start,  0 - 0.  The strong defense by both teams required cool heads and patients to stick to game plans offensively and try to keep offensive mistakes to a minimum in damp game played on turf.  The cloud covered weather at LaSalle High School consisted of intermittent drizzle.  In the defensive battle, field position and possession was at high stakes. Often turnovers being the greatest reward for strong efforts.  Near the end of the first half, Coventry nearly got on the board if not for a slightly forward pass ahead of a wouldn’t be try that was dotted down in the corner and correctly called back .  But that was not to be and time was nearly at half way.  Coventry not able to take advantage of a number of penalties awarded to them, settled at the half break with the score still level and unchanged from the start.

In the early portion of the second half, LaSalle broke the ice first.  The 0 - 0 stalemate was no longer, after a second half 5 point try and successful conversation to take the lead 7 - 0 over Coventry.  Next to score, was Coventry with a try that would go unconverted to make the score 7 - 5  still in favor of LaSalle.  The balance of the second have was much like the first half until near the end.  The next change on the scoreboard near about 5 minutes remaining to play.  An unconverted try was added by LaSalle to make the score 12-5.  With time on the side of LaSalle, the same intensity of the game never dropped from the start and continued until the final full time whistle.

Congratulations to LaSalle College High School Juniors on a very  hard fought contest and win as they will play this Sunday at the Rugby PA 15s State Championships at Penn State Berks.

Much of the core of this Junior Coventry team has played along with some of our 10th grade High School players, in four 15s season State Cup Semi-Finals and one 15s State Final since 2021.  Combine that quality 15s record  with two back to back 7s State championship wins in 2022 & 2023.  While we are disappointed our spring season didn’t make it to the last game, we are consistently proud of our players, their achievements and their growth as both players and teammates.  The teams defense and offensive play is right along with the best for their age, with this regular and playoff seasons points for and points against tally being 202 - 41.  Many good things to come for this group of players who have had their ranks supplemented and enhanced by a number of new player contributions this spring.

Thanks to all the parents and family support along the way.

Next week after this past week off, the team will shift gears into Summer 7s training to work on their sevens game for the months of June and July to prep in advance of the fall 2024 7s State Cup season.
